Vision
Scripture Union Honduras envisions children, youth, and families coming to a personal faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, growing in Christian maturity, and becoming faithful members of the church and servants to a world in need.
I. Our History
In 1867, a young man named Josiah Spiers took a group of Sunday school children to a special meeting where he witnessed American evangelist Payson Hammond leading the event. In Victorian England, children were usually passive spectators in church services, but Hammond actively involved them. That spark ignited Josiah’s vision for ministry with children and marked the beginning of the movement. Shortly afterward, a Bible reading plan was created to help children read and learn from Scripture.
II. What we Believe
God and the Human Race
We hold that the Lord our God is one: “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and that He accomplishes His sovereign purposes—in creation, revelation, redemption, judgment, and the coming of His Kingdom—by calling a people to come out of the world and be united with Him and with one another in love.
We acknowledge that, although God made us in His own image and likeness, granting us dignity and worth, and enabling us to respond to Him, we are now members of a fallen race, having sinned and being separated from His glory.
We believe that the Father has shown us His holy love by giving Jesus Christ, His own Son, for us, when because of our sinfulness and guilt we were subject to His wrath and condemnation; and He has shown us His grace by reconciling sinners to Himself when they place their trust in the Son of God."
We confess Jesus Christ as Lord and God, truly human, born of the virgin Mary; as the Servant, without sin, full of grace and truth; as the only Mediator and Savior, who died on the cross in our place, representing us before God, redeeming us from the power, guilt, and penalty of sin; as victorious over Satan and his forces, who rose from the dead with a glorious body, was taken up to be with His Father, and will one day return personally, in glory and judgment, to establish His Kingdom.
We believe in the Holy Spiritwho convicts the world of guilt concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment; who applies the death of Christ effectively to sinners by declaring that they must turn to Christ in repentance and directing their trust to the Lord Jesus Christ; who, through the new birth, enables us to partake in the life of the risen Christ; and who dwells in all believers, enlightening their minds to understand the truth of Scripture, producing His fruit in them, granting them His gifts, and empowering them to witness in the world.
The Scriptures
We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are inspired by God, as their authors spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, they are entirely trustworthy in all that they affirm, and thus are our supreme authority in matters of faith and life.
The Church and Its Mission
We acknowledge the Church as the body of Christ, united and growing in Him; both as the worldwide community of believers and as the local congregation where believers gather. We recognize Christ’s commission to proclaim the good news to all peoples, making disciples and teaching them to obey Him. We also acknowledge Christ’s command to love our neighbors, which results in service to both the Church and society, the pursuit of reconciliation for all—with God and with one another; the proclamation of freedom from all forms of oppression; and the extension of Christ’s justice in an unjust world… until He comes again.
This statement was approved by the International Council of Scripture Union in Harare, Zimbabwe, in May 1985.
